KUANTAN: For the first time ever, a national- level quiz for pharmacy undergraduates will be held at the International Islamic University (IIU) branch campus here this weekend.
Fourteen teams from nine public and private institutions of higher learning will participate in the inaugural competition known as IIU National Pharmacy Quiz 2009 or "Rx Quiz '09".
The participating universities include IIU; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Universiti Sains Malaysia; Universiti Teknologi Mara; International Medical University; Management and Science University; Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University; University of Nottingham; and Ireland College of Technology.
The two-day competition is being organised by IIU Pharmacy Students Society with the cooperation of the IIU and The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd office here.
Programme manager Mohd Azwadi Kamarudin (IIUMRx5) said each team of four members would have to answer questions on various topics on pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice and physiology.
He said similar quizzes had been held for medical undergraduates every year, but none had ever been organised for pharmacy students to date.
"It will raise the quality of pharmacy graduates and serve as a platform for the participants to test their skills and knowledge," Azwadi said.
IIU rector Professor Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Idid will open the quiz on Saturday, while its deputy rector (academic and planning) Professor Datuk Dr Md Tahir Azhar is scheduled to close and present the prizes to the winners on Sunday.
The champion team will receive a challenge trophy, RM1,000 cash and certificates.
