Pharmacy students vie for honours - 2009/09/30 (nst)

KUANTAN: For the first time ever, a national- level quiz for pharmacy undergraduates will be held at the International Islamic University (IIU) branch campus here this weekend.

Fourteen teams from nine public and private institutions of higher learning will participate in the inaugural competition known as IIU National Pharmacy Quiz 2009 or "Rx Quiz '09".

The participating universities include IIU; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Universiti Sains Malaysia; Universiti Teknologi Mara; International Medical University; Management and Science University; Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology University; University of Nottingham; and Ireland College of Technology.

The two-day competition is being organised by IIU Pharmacy Students Society with the cooperation of the IIU and The New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd office here.

Programme manager Mohd Azwadi Kamarudin (IIUMRx5) said each team of four members would have to answer questions on various topics on pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice and physiology.

He said similar quizzes had been held for medical undergraduates every year, but none had ever been organised for pharmacy students to date.

"It will raise the quality of pharmacy graduates and serve as a platform for the participants to test their skills and knowledge," Azwadi said.

IIU rector Professor Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Idid will open the quiz on Saturday, while its deputy rector (academic and planning) Professor Datuk Dr Md Tahir Azhar is scheduled to close and present the prizes to the winners on Sunday.

The champion team will receive a challenge trophy, RM1,000 cash and certificates.

Statements Dr. Zainol

Salam. ingat tak, sebelum exam dulu, Dr. Zainol ade terangkan pasal kaitan antara metabolic alkalosis dan hypokalemia...? Last lecture sebelum midsem..Ok, ade sedikit pembetulan pada statement beliau. Nak mudah, rujuk semula gambar rajah cell membrane dan blood vessel tu..

Statement 1 :
a) Situation :Low level of acid (H plus) in blood vessel. High level of Potassium (K) in blood vessel = metabolic alkalosis
b) Compensatory event : Acid in cell will go into the blood vessel to increase the conc. of acid in blood vessel. In conjuction to that, potassium (K) will oppositely goes out of blood vessel into cell. Acid level is normalized. K is decreased in blood vessel.
c) Result : Metabolic alkalosis causes hypokalemia. ----} TRUE

Statement 2 :

a) Situation : Low level of K in blood vessel. High level of acid in blood vessel = hypokalemia
b) Compensatory event : Acid(H plus) will go into the blood vessel from cell. In conjuction to that, K will oppositely goes out from blood vessel into the cell. K level in the blood vessel is decreased. Acid level is increased.
c) Result : Hypokalemia results in acidosis. ---------------} FALSE

Correction :
a) Situation : High level of K in blood vessel, low level of acid in blood vessel = Hyperkalemia
b) Compensatory event : K from the cell will go out from the blood vessel into cell in order to decrease the level of K in blood vessel. In conjuction to that, acid (H plus) will be oppositely goes into the blood vessel from the cell. K level will be normal back. H plus level will be high.
c) Result : Hyperkalemia results in acidosis ---------------} TRUE

I thought it's already over long time ago, ( staying off campus makes me unaware of mahallah's things) without realizing that the ball is STILL in my court..maaf lambat bagitau ye anda2 semua..Now, the ball is passed then..Agreed? =)

Bed-Shaped Robot

Panasonic announced the development of a bed-shaped robot which can be transformable between a bed and a wheelchair with the user staying in bed or wheelchair. The Robotic Bed is designed to help people with limited mobility maintain an independent lifestyle, reducing the need for assistance and expanding their mobility.

Aiming to bring about secure, safe and comfortable living, Panasonic has been conducting research and development activities in the field of welfare robots that assist human beings. For people who need assistance with daily living activities, it is essential to secure a safe and comfortable way to move on their own to lead an independent life. For care workers, it requires physical exertion to lift and move such a person from the bed to a wheelchair and carries risks of dropping and injuries. The Robotic Bed provides solutions for the both.

As the robot can transform itself from a bed into a wheelchair and vice versa at the command of the user, it eliminates not only the need for the user to transfer between the bed and a wheelchair but also the risks and burden associated with the transfer. The robot can also expand the user’s range of activities. Now, the user can join the family meal by converting the bed into a wheelchair and moving to the dining table without the need of assistance from other people.

Human-robot interface technologies are also employed to facilitate easy operation with no need for training. An interactive interface enables the user to easily transform the bed into the wheelchair. The wheelchair has an intuitive controller that allows the user to easily drive it and give it an instruction to go back into the bed.

The Robotic Bed also features Robotic Canopy, an information interface that allows for viewing television as well as operating home appliances and checking the security camera connected by home network. The display of the Canopy moves according to the user’s position and lifts automatically when the robot is converted into the wheelchair mode.

“It is still a concept model and we will not be selling it soon,” said Panasonic spokeswoman Yuka Arii. “We plan to bring it to markets in or after 2015. But we don’t know the price yet.” Japan has one of the world’s oldest populations and faces a constant shortage of care workers. - http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/articles/20090918174738/Article/index_html

Ubat & Puasa

Bulan puasa hampir tamat. Pengambilan ubat-ubatan sepatutnya jangan diabaikan.
